Anne and Bob took a much-needed break Oct 16-20 and went to Smith River, CA — just S of the CA – OR border, halfway between Brookings OR and Crescent City CA. Smith River is a small community consisting largely of ratty-looking trailer parks, but with some really nice cottages and houses along the river and ocean coast. We rented one of those through VRBO, and settled in to recuperate after having gotten swept up in more activities than we really needed at RVM.
The house is on a minor outflow channel of the river, across from an elongated island that separates the ocean from a lagoon (see Google Earth pics below). There was about a 2 m tide range and some decent-sized swells, so lots of water action. And many critters — so our binoculars and cameras got a workout, with Bob playing with his telephoto lens.

This was an exceptionally restorative trip and we are looking forward to going back. A couple notes for potential Smith River visitors: 1) Be prepared to bring your own food or travel about twenty minutes to either Crescent City or Brookings for good restaurants, and 2) At the time of our visit, only local tribal members were allowed to fish from shoreline adjacent to the house.
